Visit from the Bobby Van May 2017

On the 2nd May 2017 we had a visit from the Bobby Van Trust. Doug (an ex-policeman) gave us a very interesting talk about how we can keep ourselves, our belongings and our property safe and secure from criminals.

He had a display table full of items to help with this such as key safes, door chains and window latches.  He passed items around, and answered everybody’s questions. We also found out that anybody who lives in Wiltshire can request a free home visit if they are worried about their security at home.

Conversations with Bath University Students, March and April 2017

We were invited again this year to help with training Social Work students from the University of Bath. We do this so that they have a better understanding of how to communicate with people with learning difficulties.

One of our members, Andrew said ” It was very, very good. I enjoyed meeting the students and talking to them”.

Thank you to all our members who took part in the conversations.

Wiltshire People 1st go to the SENDIS event February 2017

Wiltshire Parent Carer Council held a Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities Information Service (SENDIS) Event.

On Friday 3rd February, 2017, Angie Carmichael our Director and Louise Young one of our younger members, took part in the information day at the Corn Exchange in Devizes, organised by the Parent Carers group.  We went to tell parents about Wiltshire People 1st and network with other services.

Sonia arrived early to set up the Wiltshire People 1st display and stand and then supported Louise to talk to visitors.

There were over 40 other organisations, providing information about the help and advice available for parents and carers of young people with learning difficulties.

During the day we spoke to lots of people about the work that Wiltshire People 1st does and many took away our leaflets and newsletters.

There was also the opportunity to look around at the other stands to see what’s on offer. Louise did a tour and picked up leaflets to share with members. She said  “ it was really interesting I didn’t know there was such a lot of things out there for people”.

We hope more people will know about us and get involved in our groups and activities. It will be good to see some new faces at our Young People’s Group!

Here is a photo of Louise helping at our stand.
